Return to War and Independence

American Cartridge Box and Ammunition

1778

Most American soldiers carried their ammunition in cartridge boxes worn over the shoulder or around the waist. These leather pouches contained drilled wooden blocks to hold individual cartridges, round paper tubes containing gunpowder, lead bullets, and often (as here) small buckshot that improved a soldier's chance of hitting his target. This example from the American Revolutionary era includes a whisk and pick, which was used to clean a flintlock musket's firing mechanism when it was fouled by burned gunpowder. The individual cartridges, components, and bullet mold are also from the era of the Revolutionary War.
