Return to An Ongoing Revolution

George Washington Toby Jug

ca. 1900

Arthur S. Higgins of New York City patented the design of this George Washington jug in 1896 at the height of the so-called Colonial Revival. Sparked by displays of Colonial- and Revolutionary-era items at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, a wave of nostalgia for the Founding era swept through American society in the late 1800s.
