John Pawling Wallet
1778, January
Men carried decoratively stitched pocketbooks, or wallets, like this one to keep their money and personal papers organized. This wallet is stitched with the name of its owner, John Pawling, and the year 1775. Pawling's home was located across the Schuylkill River from the Continental Army's camp at Valley Forge. During the encampment, his house became the headquarters of the Army's commissary department.
