<p>This private letter from merchant John Rucker in l'Orient, France, carried the welcome news that Britain, France, and Spain had recently signed final articles of peace that would end the war and establish the <span class="wordDefine" tabIndex="0" data-term="Independence" data-def="Relying on oneself and no longer being affiliated to or controlled by others. Its recipient John Brown was an assistant to Robert Morris, the "financier of the American Revolution."</p>

This letter carried the news that Britain, France, and Spain had signed articles of peace that would end the war and establish United States independence.
