Return to War and Independence

Portrait of Stephen Minor

1781, May

Pennsylvania-born Stephen Minor was an officer in the Spanish Army during the Revolution. In 1779, the same year Spain openly joined the war, Minor traveled to New Orleans to pick up Spanish supplies for the Continental Army. He joined the Spanish Army with the rank of captain. Minor fought with the Spanish throughout the south, including at the battles of Mobile (Alabama) and Pensacola (Florida). After the war, Minor settled in Natchez, becoming a wealthy landholder, a Spanish commissioner, bank president, and the last Spanish governor of Natchez before it was ceded to the United States in 1798.
