Rebecca Flower Young Ad

1781, June 26

Rebecca Flower Young, a flag maker in Philadelphia, placed this ad in The Pennsylvania Packet, a Philadelphia newspaper, on June 26, 1781. Working about a block away from where the Museum of the American Revolution is today, Young made standards, or flags, for the Continental Army and Navy, drum cases, and blankets. Young’s daughter Mary, born in 1776, likely worked with her mother to do these military sewing projects. Mary, later known as Mary Young Pickersgill, made the flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore. That flag inspired Francis Scott Key to write the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
